At Helena Medical we take great pride in providing the best possible customer service from your very first contact with us to your safe return home, and even after that.

Your happiness and well-being is our number 1 goal at all times

Pre-operative care

After you have contacted Helena Medical Care, we will inform you about the planned examinations and treatments with all the details you need to know. We will also provide you with written instructions for the examinations.

When arriving for surgery, you must have refrained from eating and drinking at least 6 hours.

(If the treatment demands anaesthesia, the patient's stomach must be empty in order to prevent any of its contents entering the lungs.)

We recommend that you take a shower in the morning on the day of your surgery, so that your skin is as clean as possible.

We will also send you a preliminary data sheet for surgery patients, and kindly ask you to fill it in in advance. You can bring it with you to our clinic or you can send it to us via email.

Post-operative care

All patients receive detailed care instructions after their surgery.

As a rule of thumb, you shouldn't touch the area around the wound, so that it remains as clean as possible. If possible, try to refrain from excess movement of the area. Otherwise, it is important for you to move around, as movement prevents intravenous blockages.

Exercise that makes you sweat is recommended only after the stitches have been removed and the wound has healed.

The area around the wound can be cleaned within 2 days of surgery (sometimes even within 1 day).

It is also important to pay attention to any pain caused by the wound and to take painkillers regularly so that you are able to breathe, move and sleep well. This will help you to recover well.

We do our best to estimate in advance how long we recommend you to stay in the location/city where you have been operated on.

Before we release you home from our care, you are checked regularly – sometimes even daily – by your attending doctor. At some locations, such as Savonlinna, we also make "house calls" at your place of accommodation.

The wound area will often have a drain to remove blood or other fluids. We will provide you with detailed instructions on how long you need to use the drain.

The stitches are usually removed within 8–10 days after surgery.

We will book your final check-up visit based on the instructions given by your attending doctor.

We are always looking to improve our care and service, so we will kindly ask you to fill in an evaluation form concerning the treatment and care you have received from us.
